Of an evening
02 June 2016 12pm - 8pm
An evening of exhibitions and happenings hosted by the MONTO Arts Group
The Souvenir Shop
13 North Great Georges Street
12 noon-6p (last visitors 5.30pm) Admission free
The Souvenir Shop by Rita Duffy curated by Helen Carey is an Arts Council of Ireland Open Call project marking the centenary of the 1916 Rising. Drawing on the idea of Tom Clarke’s tobacconist as a hub for rebels, what Rita Duffy does is appropriate, re-brand, consume and upend ideas of state, rebellion and survival. In allowing the consumer to become complicit in buying the products, such as Rebel Razor shaving cream or Patriot Darjeeling tea, Duffy suggests that ideology and conflict can be managed and packaged, and in doing this humour and absurdity thrive, allowing the viewer to think of the darkside of what trauma and trouble can mean in ordinary lives.

As a backdrop to the works Grimes has constructed blinds which will gently illuminate and isolate the environment.
