The Lost and Found Sound Assembly

George Higgs, 2013

Locations: Ringsend Bring Centre, West Essex Street, Temple Bar and Wolfe Tone Square

George Higgs created a musical instrument made of found objects from Dublin City Council recycling faculties on which an original composition was performed by the Lost and Found Sound Assembly.  The Lost and Found Sound Assembly was an ensemble consisting of George Higgs, renowned percussionist Sean Carpio and from teenagers from St Mary’s School for the Deaf.

The project developed following Higgs two years as composer in residence at St. Mary's School for Deaf Girls, where the deaf musicians in this group previously gathered together under George's direction as 'The Sense Ensemble'.

The Lost and Found Sound Assembly stems from George Higgs interest in finding and making music in unusual places. It was performed on a music structure or ‘Higgstrument’ made from materials sourced entirely from Council recycling centres. These include steel pipes and tubes, bike wheels, copper, and wavin pipes, kitchen tins, discarded wood and drums made out of steel boilers.

The piece was performed on three consecutive Saturdays in March 2013 at one of the city’s Bring Centres – Ringsend then on Essex Street West, Temple Bar (at the foot of Cow’s Lane) and Wolfe Tone Square off Jervis Street.
