Travelogue
Theresa Nanigian, 2011
Various Locations
In Travelogue, artist Theresa Nanigian created an intimate portrait of the lives of those who work and travel on the public transport network of the Greater Dublin Area. The exhibition took place over three weeks on advertising sites across the public transport network.
Travelogue was a truly “public” art commission, consisting of personal stories told by the public and transport staff, and displayed publicly in the form of 48 sheet posters, at bus-shelters, at rail and bus stations, on advertising sites, on street signage and on buses, trains and trams all over Dublin during the first two weeks of May 2012.
To investigate the small undocumented dramas of the daily commute, artist Theresa Nanigian embarked on a series of “residencies” across all service providers – Dublin Bus, Iarnród Éireann, Luas, Bus Éireann, taxi services and even dublinbikes – collecting travel stories and gathering data.
The stories that emerged from this nine month investigation are heart-warming, poignant and often hilarious. They are the quiet confessions told to taxi drivers from the back seat of the cab, stories of lost luggage and lost souls, small acts of charity and heroic gestures of empathy. Travelogue is quite simply a celebration of the wit and humanity of the people of Dublin as they travel around the capital city.
Participants' texts were installed as large posters and posted across all forms of public transport in Dublin during the first two weeks of May 2012 - on trains, trams and buses and at waiting points.
Commissioned by the National Transport Authority in partnership with Dublin City Council, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, Fingal and South Dublin County Councils under the Per Cent for Art Scheme with funding from the National Transport Authority for public transport infrastructure.
